Doug Moe has made a decision — he’s returning to the Nuggets, but to Denver just part of the time.

An assistant the past 3 1/2 seasons, Moe will now be a team consultant, spending some of the season with the team but other parts at his home in San Antonio.

“It’s good for an old guy like me,” Moe said with a laugh. “I’m going to be off the bench, I’ll go on a couple trips and I’ll be up there part of the time but not full time. The Nuggets have been great to me,” said Moe, who was the team’s head coach from 1980-90.

Denver eyeing Birdman.

The Nuggets are looking for a reserve post player and have been in early talks with representatives of Chris Andersen, a source said. “The Birdman,” known for his high-flying dunks and tenacious rebounding, played for the Nuggets from 2002-04 and makes his home in Denver. Andersen is also considering the Celtics — he made a trip to Boston to meet with officials there — as well as New Orleans, the team he played for last season.

Rapids’ Mastroeni denied.

Pablo Mastroeni of the Colorado Rapids was not named to the U.S. Olympic soccer team announced Thursday by the U.S. Soccer Federation. Mastroeni has played on two World Cup squads for the U.S. “It has been a very competitive environment, and we had some tough decisions to make,” U.S. coach Peter Nowak said.

No TV time for Cal vs. CSU.

Colorado State’s matchup against California on Sept. 27 was set for a 4 p.m. MDT start, Bears officials said. The game is not scheduled for a television broadcast in Colorado.

UNC names assistant.

Northern Colorado hired Krista Van Hauen as an assistant women’s basketball coach, head coach Jaime White said. Van Hauen currently is director of basketball operations at Bradley.

Mtn. biking a cinch for local team.

Colorado cyclists dominated the USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Championships Under-23 divisions in West Dover, Vt. Durango’s Tad Elliott won the men’s division with a time of 1 hour, 48 minutes, 57 seconds. Boulder’s Colin Cares was third at 1:52:43. In the women’s division, Boulder’s Chloe Forsman won in 1:41:02. Boulder’s Lydia Tanner was fourth (1:50:33), and Fort Collins’ Amanda Miller was fifth (1:55:30).
