Michelle Wie finished the third round Saturday of the State Farm Classic in Springfield, Ill., alone in second place at 17-under-par, one shot back.

The Stanford student was primed to try today for her first-ever LPGA Tour win that would virtually assure her of earning her tour card for 2009 — until she was disqualified for failing to immediately sign her scorecard . . . on Friday.

According to Wie, she left the tent where players sign their scorecards after Friday’s round without signing, but she was chased down by tournament volunteers. Wie returned and signed.

When tournament officials found out what happened — after Wie was well into Saturday’s round — she was DQ’d because she had already walked outside the roped-off area around the tent. She was allowed to finish the third round. The Associated Press
