DECKERS, Colo.—A 90-acre wildfire jumping from tree to tree forced the evacuation Sunday of several campgrounds and homes near Deckers, about 30 miles south of Denver.

Jefferson County sheriff’s spokeswoman Jacki Kelley said a shelter was opening at Conifer High School, about 15 miles north of the fire.

Kelley did not immediately know how many homes and campgrounds, or the number of people affected. Kelley said the fire started near a campground in the area.

Service spokeswoman Nancy Brewer said a helicopter and at least four air tankers were dropping water and fire retardant slurry on the blaze that was burning in rugged, pine covered mountains on forest service land west of Colorado 67.

The cause of the fire, first reported at about 12:30 p.m. Sunday, was not immediately known.
