A 58-year-old climbing guide from Ridgway died after a fall while solo climbing in the Grand Teton National Park.

George Gardner died Saturday of injuries he sustained after a fall on the Grand Teton in Wyoming. He wasn’t guiding any clients at the time, according to Grand Teton National Park Superintendent Mary Gibson.

Gardner was a senior guide with Exum Mountain Guides and had been a guide for 28 years, according to the company’s website.

He had extensive climbing experience in North America and the Himalayas and had done ski ascents in the Alps and Colorado.

Among other slopes, he climbed the southwest face of Kanchenjunga, in the Himalayas, and the west face of Hyani Potosi in Bolivia’s Cordillera Real.

Park rangers are investigating the accident and will issue more information as it becomes available.
