WASHINGTON — Government inspectors found the salmonella bacteria on a single Mexican-grown jalapeño pepper handled by a small Texas produce shipper. But that doesn’t solve the mystery of the nationwide outbreak.
Authorities don’t know where the pepper became tainted, and they aren’t saying that the finding exonerates tomatoes sold in the spring.
But for now, the government is advising consumers to avoid eating fresh jalapeños or salsa. Tomatoes now on the market are considered safe to eat, health officials have said since last week. The Associated Press; AP photo
