DENVER—The Denver area’s Regional Transportation District is considering a rate hike for cash-paying customers and pass holders to help pay for rising fuel costs.
A proposal will be introduced at RTD’s Aug. 19 meeting but the board wouldn’t vote on any fare hikes until October.
RTD says it expects to pay about $4.55 a gallon next year for diesel, compared to the $3.20 per gallon it pays now under a “locked in” rate.
Currently, the cash fare for local buses is $1.75. The fare for light rail is $1.75 to $4 for depending on distance.
The agency is also considering charging for parking in 40 of its parking lots.
RTD board director Chris Martinez wants any increase to be equitable for monthly pass holders and those who pay cash.
