Two men who were overdue on a hike into the Indian Peaks Wilderness area north of Eldora were found about 8:45 a.m. today by searchers.

Commander Phil West of the Boulder Sheriff’s Department identified the two as Patrick Nelson, 21, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Sean Klomparens, 20, of Rockville, Md.

Both hikers are in good condition, said West.

They had left the 4th of July campground northwest of Nederland on Saturday and planned to hike to South Arapahoe Peak in the Boulder City watershed.

They had planned to spend Saturday night in the Indian Peaks Wilderness area and then return Sunday.

But when they didn’t arrive back as planned, Nelson’s parents, who live in Windsor, notified authorities and a search was launched about 10:30 p.m. late night, said West.

Approximately 10 searchers and a dog participated yesterday and this morning.

The search effort was to have been ramped up this morning but fortunately the hikers were found before the increased manpower was brought in, said West.

West said the two hikers had become lost.

He said they are currently hiking out of the wilderness area.Howard Pankratz: 303-954-1939 or hpankratz@denverpost.com
