Ruth Lawanson, a member of the bronze medal-winning 1992 U.S. Olympic volleyball team in Barcelona, Spain, was hired as assistant women’s coach at the Air Force Academy, head coach Penny Lucas-White said.
Lawanson most recently was a three-year head coach at Division II Angelo State in Texas. She was an assistant at Fresno State and Purdue and was an All-America player at Fresno State in 1984.
Montana school signs Wyoming transfer.
Montana State-Billings men’s basketball coach George Pfeifer has announced the signing of Travis Bunker, a transfer from Wyoming. Bunker played one season at Dixie State College in Utah, then at the College of Southern Idaho before playing his junior season at Wyoming, where he played in 27 games and started three.
Broomfield golfer wins U.S. Amateur qualifier.
Stanford University player Steve Ziegler of Broomfield carded a 69 in the second and final round to win a U.S. Amateur sectional qualifier Monday at Colorado Golf Club in Parker.
Ziegler will be joined by Pueblo’s James Doidge and University of Colorado player Derek Tolan of Highlands Ranch as the three qualifiers to the U.S. Amateur Championship, which will be played Aug. 18-25 at Pinehurst in North Carolina.
Rage, Eagles will tangle early.
The Central Hockey League has finalized its schedule for the 2008-09 season, with the Rocky Mountain Rage opening on the road and the Colorado Eagles starting their season at home in Loveland. The Rage opens at Laredo on Oct. 17 and 18 before returning to Broomfield on Oct. 22 to face the rival Eagles. The Eagles have two home games against Rapid City on Oct. 17-18 before the contest with the Rage.
