COLORADO SPRINGS — Let’s see. So far along the ropes at The Broadmoor, Colorado Springs native R.W. Eaks has spotted his Mitchell High principal, a high school adviser, one of his former basketball coaches and countless familiar faces.
Eaks, 56, may be a household name to some watching the U.S. Senior Open this week, but for everybody else, he has become something of an overnight success during the past two years, following a journeyman career good enough for just four years on the regular PGA Tour.
Eaks began caddying at The Broadmoor at age 12. He later served on the grounds crew — “I was in charge of killing gophers and changing holes” — and was the pro shop “go-fer” for a summer. He became a golf and basketball standout at the University of Northern Colorado.
“I’ve probably played this course 200 times — a hundred times when I was supposed to and 100 when I snuck on,” Eaks said with a grin Tuesday. “That may help with the greens. And I’m not telling (other players), either.”
