FORT COLLINS, Colo.—Authorities investigating the death of a former Colorado State University student say he may have shot himself.

Twenty-seven-year-old Matthew Quitmeyer was found dead of a single gunshot wound in a parking lot near campus on July 25.

Investigators originally suspected his death was a homicide. But university officials and the Larimer County Coroner’s office said Wednesday that evidence found at the parking lot and his apartment point to a suicide.

CSU also said that Quitmeyer’s medical history shows he had suffered from chronic pain.

Police had stepped up patrols after Quitmeyer’s death.
