GOLDEN — Former Jefferson County music teacher and color guard coach William Samuel Paxton received a 12-year prison sentence Thursday for a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl in his marching band.

Paxton, a 43-year-old father of three, had worked at five Jefferson County schools before his arrest in October. He pleaded guilty in May to two felony counts of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust and a felony count of sexual exploitation of a child.

After his release from prison, Paxton will be on probation from 10 years to life, receiving intensive supervision for sex offenders, according to his plea agreement.

Prosecutors said Paxton targeted the girl, showing her special attention, sharing jokes, playing cards and exchanging text messages and cellphone calls throughout the day. The teenager told prosecutors Paxton raped her twice in his Littleton home.
