BOULDER — A memorial observance is planned today in Nepal for a University of Colorado at Boulder student who drowned while trying to save a friend.
Nineteen-year-old Keenan Fernandez of Atlanta drowned Thursday at a reservoir near Katmandu. She had been spending the summer with an international educational program called the Passage Project.
The program is not affiliated with CU.
Program director Vidhea Shrestha says Fernandez was swimming in the reservoir about 5:30 p.m. Thursday when a current swept away her friend.
She tried to save him but was also pulled underwater.
Shrestha said Fernandez had been in that area of Nepal for about six weeks and had planned on staying three more weeks before returning to Boulder.
