WESTMINSTER — Attempts to recall three board members of the Adams 50 School District board have either been dropped or fell short of valid signatures.
Proponents for a recall of board president cqVicky Marshall and board member cqKevin Massey said Wednesday they were about 200 signatures short of the 2,507 needed to put a recall question on the November ballot.
Attorney cqDino Valente said the signatures were rejected by the Adams County Clerk largely because of technical reasons, including illegible names or information.
Valente said his group, Restore Our Schools, may try another recall or push for the entire school board to put itself up for re-election this fall.
“Community awareness has been raised over the last few months,” Valente said. “People are talking about the issues and paying attention to what their elected officials are doing and seeking to hold them accountable.”
A third recall attempt against board member Marilyn Flachman was dropped last week at the request of Marshall and Massey. Flachman has harshly criticized both for agreeing to spend most of a $98.6 million bond issue in 2006 on a new signature high school in Westminster.
Flachman was targeted for using too much of the district’s time and resources attacking Marshall and Massey.
But the two agreed that a recall against Flachman would be counter-productive. “It would just create more of a division in the community and it’s not healthy,” Marshall said.
Besides, she said, a recall would have cost the district up to $165,000. “That all could have gone to the classroom.”
