KANSAS CITY, Mo.CHARLOTTE, N.C. FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Bill Self, the Kansas basketball coach who guided the Jayhawks to their first NCAA championship in 20 years, signed a 10-year, $30 million contract Wednesday.

The deal had been in the works since April, when Kansas came from nine points down in the final minutes to beat Memphis in a thrilling title game. He subsequently turned down an offer to return to Oklahoma State, his alma mater.

Kansas and Self, 45, said in April he had agreed to the deal while the details were worked out. Kansas also agreed to big raises for his staff as well as improvements to the school’s basketball facilities.

• A former University of Toledo basketball player has been charged with point shaving, according to a federal bill of information filed in U.S. District Court in Detroit.

Sammy Villegas, a guard who played basketball for four years at Toledo, is accused of shaving points in games during the 2004-05 and 2005-06 seasons.

Villegas also paid another player who took part in the point-shaving ring, prosecutors said. The other player was not charged or named in the bill of information, which was filed June 30. If convicted, Villegas could face up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

• Miami defensive tackle Antonio Dixon was taken to a hospital by ambulance after apparently suffering effects from the strong heat and humidity during practice in Coral Gables, Fla. The team said Dixon was in good condition, and he was expected to remain hospitalized overnight as a precaution.

• Florida tight end Cornelius Ingram missed practice with a strained left knee and his status is uncertain.

Truex agrees to stay at DEI

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Martin Truex Jr. agreed to a contract extension with Dale Earnhardt Inc. that keeps him in the No. 1 Chevrolet at least through 2009.

• Brad Coleman, 20, will replace J.J. Yeley in the No. 96 Hall of Fame Racing Toyota beginning at the Aug. 17 NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Michigan International Speedway.

Noonan dealt to Crew

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Former New England Revolution forward Pat Noonan was traded to the Columbus Crew after re-signing with Major League Soccer.

In exchange for trading Noonan’s rights, the Revolution received money for acquiring future players and the Crew’s first-round selection in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft.

• The United States dropped one spot to 31st in the FIFA world soccer rankings, matching its low since 1997. European champion Spain remained first, while Germany moved up one spot into second above World Cup champion Italy.

The Los Angeles Clippers acquired Steve Novak, a forward who can shoot from the perimeter, in a deal with the Houston Rockets. In return, the Rockets will have the option to exchange second-round picks with the Clippers in the 2011 NBA draft.

• Archipenko won the draw for the Arlington Million, taking the No. 1 post position for Saturday’s 1 1/4-mile race at Arlington Park in Illinois.
