GREELEY, Colo.—A man accused of beating a transgender woman to death has been advised of murder, hate crime and other charges against him.

Allen Ray Andrade appeared in Weld County District Court in Greeley on Wednesday.

The 31-year-old is accused of beating Justin Zapata to death with a fire extinguisher and his fists on July 17.

Authorities say the 20-year-old Zapata, who lived as a woman, was killed after Andrade discovered she was biologically male. Police say Andrade referred to Zapata as “it” when interviewed by investigators.

He faces life in prison without parole if convicted of murder. He also faces charges of vehicle theft and identity theft.

Andrade’s attorney, Annette Kundelius, has declined comment.
