In the end, it will come down to trust. As in, can the Broncos trust Brandon Marshall?
Marshall is gone, in all likelihood for two games. It isn’t good any way you spin it, but, in the words of Jay Cutler: “We’re going to have to make do. We don’t have any choice.”
They will, however, have a choice in the future. We’re talking two games. Two crucial games against AFC West opponents, but two games nonetheless.
Two games. A wave in the ocean compared with the career Marshall could have in Denver. In the Broncos’ perfect world, he’ll play 200 games before he’s finished.
At the rate he’s going, though, he won’t get there. At some point, the Broncos will have a decision to make on Marshall. And don’t kid yourself, it will come down to money. Lots and lots of money.
Marshall, in case you’re still trying to put his talent in perspective, is the most talented wide receiver in franchise history. He doesn’t just make an impact. He’s a game changer, a season changer, a franchise player.
The going rate for receivers with Marshall’s ability is about $20 million in guaranteed money. But can the Broncos trust him to stay out of trouble?
“I can’t worry about the past,” Marshall said. “All I can worry about is the future and getting better on the field and in the community.”
His future could be filled with more money than he ever dreamed of. But only if he proves to the Broncos that they can trust him.
