Champ Bailey has missed back-to-back practices with a sore right hamstring.
So that’s it. His season is over before it started. I mean, how could Bailey possibly overcome such a devastating turn of events?
Right.
Of all the 80 players in camp, Bailey may be at the top of the list among those who don’t need to be here to get ready for the season. He has played nine NFL seasons, long enough to be considered a sure-fire Hall of Famer. In those nine seasons, he has missed three games.
How much does Bailey need the preseason?
“I’ve never been shy to say I don’t like the preseason,” he said. “But that’s not why I’m not practicing. As long as I’m healthy, I’m out there.”
But if his legs are sore, he lets the kids practice. They’re the ones who need it.
“Guys depend on me,” said Bailey. “Whether it’s practice or not, if I’m healthy, I’m playing. But I’ve got to be careful, too. If I’ve got bumps and bruises, I have to rest.”
He isn’t alone. Mike Shanahan has acquired a reputation for taking care of his veteran players in camp, a major factor in the Broncos’ ability to lure free agents to Denver despite the team’s mediocre ways in recent seasons.
