Yankees right-hander Joba Chamberlain was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with rotator cuff tendinitis in his pitching shoulder. He will rest for about a week before beginning a throwing program.

Ian Kennedy is expected to be called up from the minors to start tonight’s game against the Rangers.

• Yankees catcher Ivan Rodriguez left Wednesday night’s game against Texas after bruising his right knee during a collision at home plate with David Murphy to end the second inning. The Yankees said no further tests would be required for Rodriguez, who was listed as day to day.

The Rangers said Murphy had a strained ligament in his right knee and would have an MRI today.

Indians’ Martinez could start rehab soon

Indians catcher Victor Martinez threw to the bases for the first time since being sidelined by an injured right elbow in mid-June. Martinez, also coming back from a strained left hamstring, could start a minor-league rehabilitation assignment next week.

Red Sox first baseman Kevin Youkilis was hit in the wrist by a pitch in the first inning against Kansas City and left the game after getting doubled off first base. The Red Sox said Youkilis had a bruise on the right hand and X-rays were negative.

• The Marlins activated catcher Matt Treanor (hip) from the DL and optioned catcher Paul Hoover to Triple-A Albuquerque.

• Karl Kuehl, a baseball scout, coach, author and player development specialist known for his contributions to the Athletics teams that won three pennants, died of pulmonary fibrosis in a Scottsdale, Ariz., hospital. He was 70.
