Twenty-four hours after the Barack Obama campaign announced details on how to obtain tickets to his acceptance speech for the Democratic presidential nomination at Invesco Field at Mile High, the volume of calls in Colorado has all but jammed up the phone lines.
Campaign officials say the hotline at 888-468-7404 has been tested and is working.
“We’re encouraging people to be persistent,” said Matt Chandler, a campaign spokesman.
Chandler said the phone lines, which operate from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., are staffed with volunteers who are dealing with a deluge of calls.
Callers have been getting an array of messages that suggest the lines aren’t functioning, but Chandler insists the hotline number is good.
Besides urging callers to keep trying, Chandler stressed that those interested in getting the tickets should stop by any Obama campaign office or use the Internet sign up at .
“I have it on automatic dial. I bet I’ve called it 25 times,” said Sue Adams, who lives in unincorporated Arapahoe County and wants to score a ticket for her son, Zachary, who is a “huge” Obama supporter and whose 18th birthday falls on Aug. 28, the day of Obama’s speech.
Zachary plans to register to vote the morning of the 28th and to skip that day’s schooling in order to go to Obama’s speech.
Chandler said the offices were still taking ticket requests.
The campaign has set aside half of the more than 60,000 so-called community credentials to Invesco for Coloradans.
