The scaffolding has been removed from the Sage Building, revealing a gleaming facade and windows adorned with blueprints for the structure’s interior.

Workers were busy Thursday putting the finishing touches on the building, which has long been an eyesore in the heart of the downtown business district.

Workers were installing glass stairs to the basement that will be lit from beneath at night. They also were installing stainless-steel mesh railings on the stairwell.

The Sage Building, formerly known as the Fontius Building, is named after its lead tenant, Sage Hospitality Resources, which will occupy the top three floors. American National Bank has agreed to lease 4,500 square feet of retail space at the corner of Welton and 16th streets.

Developer Evan Makovsky is still searching for a retail tenant to occupy the remaining ground-floor space.

“I’m pleased to contribute to the progress of downtown Denver and the 16th Street Mall,” Makovsky said. “We met our goal to have the exterior done by the Democratic National Convention and believe that within a year from now it will be occupied by over 300 people.”
