After a double bogey on No. 1 thanks to hitting the cart path on his approach shot, Robert Karlsson birdied the next three holes and six of his next 10. He had a slight setback with back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 14 and 15 but was still the co-leader after the first round.

Jeev Milkha Singh, right, hit a 4-iron within 5 feet on the 529-yard second hole and made the putt for an eagle.
Relief.
Temperatures topped 100 degrees in the first round last year at Southern Hills in Tulsa, Okla. Thursday, it was 75 degrees before the storms came in.

Tough finish slows Kim

Anthony Kim, the 23-year-old winner of the AT&T National last month at Congressional, was at 2-under through his first 16 holes until a bogey-bogey finish left him at even-par 70.

Hunter Mahan, who is 10th in the Ryder Cup standings, carded an 81, his highest score as a pro. He had a double-bogey on No. 1 and a triple-bogey on No. 4 for a 42 on the front.

Kenny Perry had to withdraw after the first round due to complications from recent Lasik surgery.
