GOLDEN, Colo.—A man accused of breaking into 23 homes after walking away from a halfway house has been sentenced to 144 years in prison.

David Heckman was sentenced Friday after he was convicted in February of 29 counts including residential burglary, theft and auto theft.

Jefferson County district attorney’s spokeswoman Pam Russell says the judge acknowledged the sentence meant the 32-year-old Heckman would spend the rest of his life in prison but “it was obvious he could no longer live among honest men.”

District Judge Dennis Hall also cited Heckman’s 10 felony convictions and lengthy juvenile record.

Prosecutors say Heckman broke into Littleton-area homes while the residents were inside asleep.
