DENVER—A pathologist is disputing evidence put on by Denver prosecutors in the trial of a man accused of starving a 7-year-old boy in his care.

Jon Phillips is charged with murder and fatal child abuse in the death of Chandler Grafner last year. Prosecutors say Chandler was forced to sleep and defecate in a small closet, was denied food and water, and was physically abused.

But defense expert Stephen Factor, a professor of clinical and anatomical pathology in New York, testified Friday that he is certain Chandler had diabetes, which he believes was the cause of Chandler’s dehydration and the wasting of the boy’s body.

Phillips’ girlfriend, Sarah Berry, also faces murder and child abuse charges and will be tried separately.
