PUEBLO, Colo.—Catholic officials are deciding whether to repair or demolish the spire of a Pueblo cathedral that was damaged by a lightning strike and fire.
The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart was struck Wednesday, and it took firefighters 30 minutes to douse the flames. City officials have put the damage at $250,000, mostly to the red-shingled steeple.
Some of the damage was due to water. Beams holding up a pair of 4-foot iron bells are described as soggy.
The cathedral has canceled Friday Mass. Weekend Masses have been moved to the next-door gymnasium of the Diocese of Pueblo.
