A Commerce City resident has tested positive for the West Nile virus, the first confirmed case in Adams County this year.

The unidentified 40-year-old man was hospitalized but has been released, Tri-County Health Department officials said in a press release.

There are 16 cases confirmed in Colorado this year, with no deaths. A complete statewide list is available at .

The health department said most people are infected after being bitten by mosquitoes in or around their homes.

Health experts suggest eliminating standing water around the house as a preventive measure. Pet water bowls should be cleaned daily and birdbaths and wading pools should be hosed out weekly.

Signs of the virus include headache, high fever, neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors, muscle weakness or convulsions. Persons with these symptoms should seek medical help immediately.

Information on West Nile virus can be found on the Tri-County Health Department website, ., or by calling 877-462-2911 toll free.
