The pickup lines smother her like a full nelson. Saddled up at an Australian bar, Olympic wrestler Kyla Bremner has heard it all.
“You do get the standard responses,” she said. ” ‘You don’t look like a wrestler.’ Or some of the guys say, ‘Do you want to wrestle me?’ ”
Such is life for Bremner, the first Australian female wrestler to compete at the Olympics. Bremner is a bubbly athlete with contagious effervescence. And, boys, she’s a doctor.
“I am a resident and will be working at Royal Prince Alford in Sydney,” she said. “I need to complete my residency and then will try to get into specialty training in dermatology.”
(As proclaimed by one Australian website, the wrestling M.D. is known as “Doctor Ouch.”)
Bremner wrestles Wednesday in a day-long tournament in her quest for Beijing gold.
