Boulder County Sheriff’s deputies arrested two men after a fight at a remote Boulder County camp site that put a third man in the hospital.
The victim, Ray Richards, 40, of Arvada, was using a shotgun to target shoot at a campsite near the Jenny Lake trailhead, where the two suspects were also camped, said Sheriff’s Cmdr. Phil West.
The suspects, Drake Bradshaw, 19, of Wheatridge and a 17 year-old companion, believed he was firing toward their campsite.
“They claimed that he was shooting too close to their camp when actually they were to the north of him and he was shooting to the east. He may have been hitting another camp, but not theirs,” West said.
The two exchanged words with Richards and a fight broke out. They knocked Richards down and reportedly kicked him in the head, according to a release.
Richards drove himself to a spot near Tolland in Gilpin County and was flown by a Flight for Life helicopter to St. Anthony’s Central Hospital for treatment of injuries, including fractures to his face and hand.
The teen, who is not being identified because of his age, was booked and released to his parents’ custody from the Boulder County Juvenile Detention Center.
Bradshaw is being held at the Boulder County jail pending a hearing this afternoon.
The sheriff’s office isn’t releasing a mug shot of Bradshaw pending a possible photo line-up with witnesses.
The investigation is continuing and additional charges could be filed.
