Neither rain, nor sleet, nor dark of night can deter a postal carrier from appointed rounds, but Democrats will for five days during their convention.
Mail to about 12,000 downtown Denver homes and businesses will be delivered, on average, an hour and half earlier during convention week.
Also, from Aug. 25-29, Mile High Station in the Denver Justice Center on West 14th Avenue will be closed, and the Denver main post office at 20th and Curtis streets will be open only from 7 to 11 a.m.
The post office also began removing its collection boxes from downtown Monday, calling it a standard security precaution for the convention.
The Postal Service sent letters to affected customers Monday, notifying them of the changes.
Alice Bethell, manager at Mile High Station, will move her staff of 45 to the post office at 915 S. Logan St., where they will share space and help serve walk-in customers. She’s never seen such a postal maneuver in her 20-year career, she said.
“It’s going to be a big challenge, but we’re up for the challenge, and we’re going to get the mail delivered,” she said.
Customer Frank Salamone said he had no plans to mail a letter or any other activity downtown that week.
“I’m allergic to Democrats,” said the Republican voter.
The Denver Merchant Station on the 16th Street Mall near Welton Street will be open during its regular hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Normal operations and deliveries resume Aug. 30.
