A man fatally shot himself on a Denver area highway early this morning.
West 6th Avenue between Sheridan and Wadsworth Boulevards was shut down between 3 and 6 a.m. as police investigated a suicide, police said.
Police did not release the name of the man.
At about 3 a.m. a Denver officer followed a vehicle on westbound 6th Avenue but the driver “eluded” police, said Denver police spokesman John White.
The officer continued west on 6th Avenue when he came across the vehicle parked with no one it, White said.
The officer looked around and spotted a man on foot in the eastbound lanes.
The officer approached the man, who was armed with a gun, and the man shot himself, White said.
White could not say why the officer had followed the vehicle. He also did not say whether the officer and the man had any type of verbal exchange before the man shot himself.
The shooting is under investigation.
