At least some people have a sense of humor about the Democratic National Convention coming to town Aug. 25-28.

On Sunday, a small group of neo-yippies went to a parking lot near the Pepsi Center to bop one another on the head with “peace bats” — inflatable red, white and blue bats.

On Aug. 19, the Clandestine Insurgent Rebel Clown Army will meet for training at the Mercury Cafe. According to , “Rebel Clowns are trained by CIRCA recruiting officers, using a variety of different exercises, training includes finding your inner clown, civil disobedience tactics, learning to be spontaneous and playful, practicing clown gaggle maneuvers and last but not least marching and drilling.”

Find your inner clown!

And the Karaoke Convention will take place in about a dozen karaoke bars all over Denver during the convention, with a kickoff party 8-11 p.m. Aug. 21 at Supreme Court Cafe & Nightclub in the Sheraton Denver Hotel.

The idea is to karaoke your way through various speeches of the 2008 campaign. There are even speeches by John Edwards.

To kick it off, local stars will be making karaoke speeches at the Aug. 21 party: Mayor John Hickenlooper, U.S. Rep. Mark Udall, former state Sen. Joan Fitz-Gerald, and Barack Obama’s Colorado man Ray Rivera.

Speaking of Edwards — did you see that his former para mour Rielle Hunter was once married to Alex “Kip” Hunter III, son of the JonBenet-era Boulder DA Alex Hunter? How strange is that?

By George.

George Lopez will headline opening weekend at the new Comedy Works South on Oct. 9-11.

The popular comic knocked ’em mostly dead in Denver last year at the High Hopes Dinner honoring Steve Farber. The guy’s on a high — a great act to open the swank new club.

Homecoming.

The Black Eyed Peas are in for the DNC to play the Fillmore Aug. 27. And it’s a homecoming of sorts for former Paul Garcia hair stylist Naomi Medina. She’s engaged to BEP guitarist George Pajon Jr. They met when the BEP played a private party at Kiki and Peggy Vandeweghe’s posh Cheesman Park pad on Oct. 30, 2005 — a Katrina funder blowout.

City spirit.
