ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Rays placed rookie all-star third baseman Evan Longoria on the 15-day disabled list Monday because of a right wrist fracture.

The move was retroactive to Friday, the day after Longoria was hit by a pitch from Seattle closer J.J. Putz. The team recalled outfielder Justin Ruggiano from Triple-A Durham, N.C. Willy Aybar takes over as the regular third baseman, and Ruggiano figures to share playing time in left field.

Right-hander Joba Chamberlain (shoulder) is scheduled to begin a throwing program Friday, the first step in his return to the Yankees rotation.

Also, designated hitter-left fielder Hideki Matsui ran the bases for the first time since being sidelined in late June by a left knee injury. He could start playing in minor-league rehab games soon.

• Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter will return to St. Louis today to have his strained right triceps evaluated.

• Brewers left fielder Ryan Braun is day to day with a rib cage muscle injury.

• Astros outfielder Carlos Lee had surgery to repair his broken left little finger and is expected to miss six to eight weeks.

• The Blue Jays released outfielder Shannon Stewart. He hit .240 with one homer and 14 RBIs in 52 games this season.

• Charlie Zink will replace fellow knuckleballer Tim Wakefield (shoulder) in Boston’s rotation.

• The Marlins placed reliever Doug Waechter (shoulder) on the 15-day DL and recalled Logan Kensing from Triple-A Albuquerque.
