Voters in Denver were giving overwhelming approval Tuesday to a proposal that would cut the City Council out of the ballot initiative process.

Of the 46,004 votes that had been counted by 10:30 p.m., 71 percent of the voters supported the measure, with 29 percent opposed.

The council members had grown weary in recent years of a series of controversial ballot initiatives landing before them and decided to ask the voters to streamline the initiative process.

In the past, the council was required, if a sufficient number of signatures had been gathered, to affirmatively place an initiative on the ballot.

Question 1A, the brainchild of Councilwoman Jeanne Faatz, would take the City Council out of that process.

If 1A passes, qualifying proposals will get placed automatically on future ballots without requiring an affirmative vote by the council.
