WASHINGTON — Major League Baseball is working out technical issues to start instant replay for boundary calls such as home runs, hoping to institute the system this year.

“We’ve got lots of time in August,” Bob DuPuy, the sport’s chief operating officer, said Wednesday as a two-day owners’ meeting began. “. . . There’s not any opposition to it that I’ve heard.”

Replay was among the topics discussed but doesn’t require a vote because it is not a rule change.

Rangers center fielder Josh Hamilton left Texas’ game against Boston in the sixth inning to fly home to be with his wife, who gave birth to their third daughter. He is expected to miss tonight’s game against the Red Sox as well.

• Tigers reliever Joel Zumaya went back on the 15-day disabled list with soreness in the right shoulder that was surgically repaired during the offseason.

• Rays outfielder Carl Crawford will undergo surgery on his right hand today and will be sidelined at least until the final series of the regular season.

• Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell was put on the 15-day DL with a strained left oblique muscle.

• Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter didn’t play against the Twins after fouling a ball off the inside of his left foot Tuesday night. He is expected back for Friday’s game against the Royals.

• Athletics outfielder Ryan Sweeney (thumb) was placed on the 15-day DL, while third baseman Eric Chavez had surgery to repair damage in his right shoulder and will be out for at least six months.
