Wyoming coach Joe Glenn can still play the piano. Now, if he can just find someone to play quarterback.
Although initially disappointed with the passing game in a Wednesday night scrimmage, Glenn said Thursday before the annual Front Range football kickoff lunch in Denver that he will name a starter today: returning starter Karsten Sween or junior college transfer Dax Crum.
“When you try to run the 1s, the 2s, the 3s in a scrimmage, it’s hard to get a sense of rhythm,” Glenn said. “I think we’ve going to run the football, but (new offensive coordinator Bob Cole) has always had success throwing the ball. I anticipate we’ll be better than we were last night throwing the football.”
Glenn followed annual luncheon tradition by playing a rousing rendition of the “Ragtime Cowboy Joe” fight song and distributing the digs at his Air Force and CSU rivals.
Air Force coach Troy Calhoun also has yet to name his starting quarterback, but last year’s backup, Shea Smith, has the edge over junior Eric Herbort.
“If we were to begin today, Shea would be the initial guy to play that spot for us,” Calhoun said. He would like to get both in for the Aug. 30 opener with Southern Utah.
Colorado State already named Billy Farris the starting quarterback, but coach Steve Fairchild told the gathering, “We’ll go as far as our quarterback goes.”
MWC updates.
All the coaches gave accolades to MWC commissioner Craig Thompson for seeing The Mtn.’s TV deal through to national exposure on DirecTV.
Thompson said he had a conversation with Orange Bowl representatives Thursday. The Orange Bowl gets the 10th selection this year, which could come from a non-automatic qualifying BCS conference.
Footnotes.
Air Force tight end Travis Dekker will have surgery soon. He fractured a bone in his ankle Aug. 7 and will be out up to eight weeks. . . . The Falcons will scrimmage at Falcon Stadium on Saturday, followed by a player autograph session from 11:30-noon. The Rams’ scrimmage Saturday is closed.
