BEIJING — Rockies farmhand Jayson Nix was hit in the face by a fouled bunt attempt in the U.S. loss to Cuba here Friday. He was taken to the hospital for evaluation, after which it was determined he sustained an eye injury that will keep him out of the rest of the competition.

Following is a statement by Dr. William Kuprevich, Chief Medical Officer of the U.S. Olympic Team.

“Mr. Nix sustained a laceration to the left upper eyebrow (area). His injury was evaluated with a CAT scan and a detailed eye exam. The laceration was repaired and he was treated with eye drops and rest. He will not return to play during the Games.”

Nix tied the game with a home run in the eighth inning. Cuba won in extra innings.

Nix started the season as the Rockies’ second baseman and most recently was playing for AAA Colorado Springs before being named to Team USA.
