DENVER—Attorney General Michael Mukasey has announced another $17 million in grants for states to counter gang and gun violence.

Mukasey announced the money for Project Safe Neighborhoods Thursday after meeting with Denver’s Metro Gang Task Force, a multi-agency force that recently arrested dozens of suspected gang members on drug charges.

Since Project Safe Neighborhoods began in 2001, more than $2 billion has been distributed to U.S. attorneys across the country, who then distribute the money to local law enforcement agencies.

Colorado U.S. Attorney Troy Eid says his district has received $4 million in such grants.

Mukasey says part of the program’s mission is to send the message that a lifestyle of gangs and gun crime is a dead end.
