A local Iraq veteran and University of Colorado at Boulder graduate student was chosen to meet Sen. Barack Obama backstage at Invesco Field at Mile High during the Democratic National Convention.
Boulder’s John Volkmar, who served almost 10 years in the Army, was picked by the Obama campaign to go “Backstage with Barack” for an essay he wrote on why he should be the one to meet the presidential candidate.
Campaign manager David Plouffe sent out an e-mail challenging supporters to write a 100-word essay on why they are behind Obama and why they want to meet him.
The campaign chose 10 people — including a retired teacher from Florida and a Republican law student from Ohio — to meet Obama before he speaks at Invesco Field on Aug. 28.
Volkmar left the Army to pursue his MBA at CU-Boulder.
“After seeing the link between the country’s energy dependence and our failed foreign-policy approach firsthand, I decided to go back to school to work toward a more effective national energy policy,” Volkmar said in a prepared statement.
