A $1.4 million lighting project in tunnels on Interstate 70 near Idaho Springs will start Monday.

The night project will include removal of the existing lighting, installation of new conduits, lighting, fixtures, control equipment and guardrails, among other work.

The eastbound and westbound lanes of the twin tunnels will be reduced to one lane from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Mondays through Thursdays, the Colorado Department of Transportation said in a news release.

On Sundays, starting Aug. 24, work will run from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Speed through the tunnels will be reduced to 45 mph and vehicles wider than 11 feet will be restricted.

The project will run through November and then shut down for the winter. It will resume in the spring and is scheduled to be completed in June 2009. CDOT engineers say that when the project is complete, it should improve traffic flow in the area.

DKS Enterprises Inc. of Brighton is the contractor.
