FORT CARSON, Colo.—U.S. Sen. Wayne Allard says he will introduce legislation next month to prohibit the Army from using eminent domain to expand its Pinon Canyon training site in southeast Colorado.

The Colorado Republican says although the Army is committed to acquire land from willing sellers, landowners are still apprehensive. Allard says he wants to “help ease that concern.”

The Army had proposed an expansion of 418,000 acres but last month scaled back the plan to 100,000 acres because of opposition from ranchers.

Army officials they need additional land for training at Fort Carson. Their original plan would’ve tripled their training site. Ranchers say the area’s economy will suffer if they lose agricultural land.
