Outdated snowboards and skis will never see a landfill again if Colorado Ski & Golf has its way. Instead, the gear will be turned into furniture, composite decking and other items.

Colorado Ski & Golf, owned by Denver-based Specialty Sports Venture, is kicking off a recycling program for ski equipment including bindings, poles, boots and other ski accessories at its annual Ski Rex sale Labor Day weekend. Specialty Sports Venture teamed up with Snowsports Industries of America, a trade group, to create and offer the recycling program, the first of its kind in the nation.

“Nearly every skier and snowboarder I know is concerned about the environment and trying to do the right thing to minimize their impact on the Earth,” said Ken Gart, president of Specialty Sports Venture. “This collaboration with SIA offers Colorado skiers and riders the opportunity to do something meaningful in reducing landfill debris and, in some cases, providing old equipment to future skiers and riders who couldn’t otherwise afford it.”

Beginning Aug. 30 at the five Ski Rex locations, anyone can bring in equipment to be recycled. Equipment in good condition may be donated to charities, and the rest will be recycled.

The program is funded by a recycling fee added to all new purchases — $5 for skis and snowboards and $3 for boots. Those who do not want to pay can opt out of the fees. There is no fee for those who recycle but do not purchase.
