Being the goalie in water polo is dubious duty. In that sport there are generally double-digit goals scored by each team. But Monday, American goalie Merrill Moses blocked 14 shots to preserve a United States victory against Germany, 8-7.
Moses, who started playing water polo in high school because he didn’t want to play football in the August heat, has been a key cog in the success of the men’s water polo team. The Americans are 4-1 and have locked up the top seed in their group, which moves the team directly into the semifinals. The U.S. team will play for a medal for the first time since 1992.
It has been a memorable Olympics for Moses, a native of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. He turned 31 this week.
