University of Colorado golfer Derek Tolan and Colorado State’s Zen Brown are five strokes back of the leader after Monday’s first round of the USGA U.S. Amateur Championship at Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina.
Tolan, of Highlands Ranch, and Brown, of Arvada, carded 2-over-par 72s. Tolan was playing on the Pinehurst No. 2 course, Brown on Pinehurst No. 4.
Andrew Putnam of University Place, Wash., and Wesley Bryan of Chapin, S.C., were the first-round leaders at 3-under 67.
Avs rookies report Sept. 14.
The Avalanche will begin its 2008 training camp Sept. 14, the team said, drawing in a number of rookies hoping to make the NHL roster.
Colorado’s rookie camp runs from Sept. 14-17 at the Avs’ practice facility at South Suburban Family Sports Center. Practices are free and open to the public.
Veterans report for preseason practice Sept. 20.
• The NHL changed three Avs game times for the upcoming season. Colorado will host St. Louis at the Pepsi Center on April 12 at 3 p.m. Also, the Avs will play at Calgary on Oct. 14 and Oct. 28, both at 7:30 p.m.
DU women soccer favorites.
Sun Belt Conference women’s soccer coaches tabbed the University of Denver as the preseason favorite, and DU put a conference-high four players on the preseason all-SBC team.
The Pioneers received 141 total points, followed by North Texas with 128. Seniors Jessi Keller (Ralston Valley High School) and Taryn Hemmings (Greeley West) and juniors Lizzy Carlson and Mackenzie Snyder received the preseason honors.
