GREELEY — A 23-year-old Greeley man whose 11-month-old son was electrocuted in the family’s home last week faces a felony charge of child abuse negligently causing death after a week-long investigation into the case.
Weld County District Attorney Ken Buck announced the filing of the charge Tuesday against Ernesto Talavera-Nunez. He was arrested by police a day after the death of his son, Christian Luis Talavera-Garcia, when investigators learned that he had worked on an alarm clock at their home and left exposed electrical wires within reach of the child, district attorney spokeswoman Jennifer Finch said.
Police said the boy’s mother, Crystal Tapia, heard a scream from the living room and found Christian lying on his back with the alarm clock between his legs. An electric cord from the clock was still plugged in to an outlet behind children’s toys, police said. If convicted, Talavera-Nunez could face a maximum of 16 years in prison.
