Steiner, of Germany, pulled out a dramatic gold in men’s over 105-kilogram weightlifting Tuesday. Steiner won with the last lift of the competition after trailing throughout. Russia’s Evgeny Chigishev led at the halfway mark with a 210kg snatch, with Steiner in fourth. Chigishev completed all of his attempts in the clean and jerk, and his final lift of 250kg gave him a total of 460kg (1,012 pounds) and what looked like an insurmountable lead. Steiner, on his last lift, increased the weight to 258kg after failing at lesser totals and stole the gold.

Steiner competed for Austria at the 2004 Athens Games but got upset with that country’s weightlifting federation and applied for German citizenship. He was banned from international competition for three years while he waited to become a citizen of Germany. He got his citizenship in January.
