The final open slot on the Denver Center Theatre Company’s upcoming 30th season will be José Cruz González’s comedy, “Sunsets and Margaritas.”
The choice means the DCTC will again present three world premiere plays in the season beginning in September. Last year, the three new plays ran simultaneously to coincide with the DCTC’s Colorado New Play Summit.
This time the three will be spread out between February and May, with “Sunsets” playing April 3 through May 16, 2009, in The Ricketson Theatre
González previously wrote the magical realism drama “September Shoes,” presented by the DCTC in 2005.
For “Sunsets,” González met with Latino focus groups throughout Colorado to research his commission for DCTC artistic director Kent Thompson. His goal was to find out what was on the minds of people from the community. “Sunsets” was further developed in two staged readings in Denver over the past year.
In the play, three generations of a Mexican-American family are plunged into comic crisis when patriarch Candelario starts to lose his grip. The conservative Serrano family’s values are abandoned by assimilated younger generation, and the appearance of a mysterious, ageless woman sends the family spinning comically out of control.
