China hosting the Olympics figured to be ratings gold for broadcasters worldwide, and it has proved to be. The Beijing Games will go down as the biggest broadcast event in Olympic history. The opening ceremony had 842 million Chinese watching at least part of the program, according to Timo Lumme, IOC director of television. He said the worldwide audience for the opening ceremony “could be around 1.2 billion” when final numbers are in. NBC had its largest Saturday night audience in 18 years when Michael Phelps won his eighth gold medal: about 40 million viewers. The Denver Post
