The Colorado Public Utilities Commission this week gave verbal approval to Xcel Energy’s plan for meeting future consumer power needs, which includes closing a pair of coal-fired power plants and adding 1,050 megawatts of renewable generation.

The renewable power will include 200 megawatts of generating capacity with storage capability, such as concentrating solar power.

The PUC’s written decision is expected to be issued by mid-September. Xcel will then solicit bids for the projects, which will be reviewed by an independent evaluator and regulators, a process that will probably take until mid-2009.
