Getting your player ready...

NEW YORK — Braves left-hander Tom Glavine underwent surgery on his pitching elbow and shoulder Thursday and is expected be ready to start a throwing program by January.

Glavine, 42, isn’t under contract for next season and has said he only wants to pitch for Atlanta, close to his home and family.

• First baseman Greg Norton was scratched from Atlanta’s lineup because of a stiff left shoulder.

Pavano to start

TORONTO — Right-hander Carl Pavano, written off by Yankees fans, will return and start for the team Saturday at Baltimore.

Pavano, nicknamed “American Idle” by New York tabloids, signed a $39.95 million, four-year contract with the Yankees before the 2005 season but injuries to his shoulder, back, buttocks, elbow and ribs have limited him to 19 appearances for New York, and only two since June 27, 2005.

Footnotes.

The Athletics placed right-handers Justin Duchscherer (hip) and Sean Gallagher (shoulder) on the 15-day disabled list. Both moves were retroactive to Wednesday.

• Ryan Church (post-concussion syndrome) could be back in the Mets’ outfield tonight for the opener of a four-game series against the Astros.

• Royals outfielder Mitch Maier was placed on the 15-day DL with multiple facial fractures.

• Utilityman Jose Bautista was acquired by the Blue Jays from the Pirates for a player to be named.

• Major League Baseball and ESPN signed a new digital rights agreement that runs through 2013.
