Republican Senate candidate Bob Schaffer will come off the campaign trail for as long as two weeks beginning Aug. 26, while his wife undergoes treatment for a tumor on her auditory nerve discovered in early June.
The tumor is benign and doctors predict a full recovery, but Schaffer campaign manager Dick Wadhams called the procedure to remove it “a very delicate surgery.” Schaffer will accompany his wife, Maureen, to Phoenix for the procedure and the recovery, which is expected to take between 7 and 14 days, Wadhams said.
“The campaign will continue to do what the campaign does. But Bob will not have any public events obviously from the surgery through the recovery period while she’s in Phoenix,” Wadhams said.
“We’ll just play it by ear after the surgery is done on Thursday (Aug. 28) and see how she does. Hopefully, she’ll bounce back quickly and it will go well,” Schaffer’s manager said.
Democrat Mark Udall, Schaffer’s opponent in the race, released a statement soon after the news became public.
“Maggie and I will keep Bob, Maureen, and their family very close in our thoughts today,” Udall said in a release. “Our prayers will be with Maureen for a successful surgery and a speedy recovery.”
Schaffer and his wife live in Ft. Collins and have five children.
