PARAMUS, N.J. — For the third time this season, PGA Tour rookie Kevin Streelman has popped up on the national golf stage.
The previous two appearances were cameos. But as the third- round leader of The Barclays, the first of four $7 million events comprising the season-ending FedEx Cup playoffs, Streelman is auditioning for a starring role after Saturday’s round.
While overnight leader Steve Stricker struggled to a 77 that featured a triple in a calamitous back-nine 43, Streelman shot a 68 that put him at 8-under 205.
Streelman is one stroke ahead of the formidable foursome of Vijay Singh (66), Mike Weir (67) and Paul Casey and Sergio García, who each shot 69.
Earlier this season, Streelman, ranked No. 102 in the FedEx Cup points and No. 209 in the world rankings, played his way into a third-round threesome with Tiger Woods at the Buick Invitational in January and shared the first-round lead at the U.S. Open in June.
